Silk Screening... Again!

Soo.... After my silk screen dried, it didn't turn out so well. I decided to try it again but let the emulsion dry for 24 hours before exposing the screen. Sadly, my second attempt turned out even worse than my first. I proofed the screen and it may work. I was able to get one of the school screens clean, and my try it one last time on that screen to see if it yields any better results. Hopefully my problem was just the nylon I used in making my own screens. Wish me luck!!

Silk Screen

I exposed my silk screen, as pictured. It's drying now. Don't know how well it worked because emulsion wasn't completely dry when I exposed the screen. I'll upload pictures when I prof it.

Silk screening

So, I've begun preparing a screen to silk screen some prints. Unfortunately, I ran into some problems getting a screen clean, as we are out of the proper emulsion remove. But luckly, I was able to make my own screen out of a back-wards canvas frame and nylon, and I have enough left over material to make more screens if I have the time. Let's hope it works. Still have to decide what medium to print on, thinking t-shirts, I like the idea of mass produced political art. Pictures will come when screen is light safe.

2nd print, 2nd layer

I've hand printed found images/type face on this print. I think ill add a 3rd letter press layer in blue, but am still trying to decide what to say.

3rd Print in progress!

This is a print I'm creating for my Printmaking class, but relates to the prints I'm creating for this so I decided to include it. I took two digital images, I'm digitaly printing only the reflection from sunglasses, then soft ground step etched the rest of the glasses and face on copper, and a collograph print of the second image to be layered on. Pictures of the progress.

First Print!

My first print of the series. This is a 5*7 in digital + solar lithographic print.

Second Print, first layer.

this is the first (digital) layer of my second print. It's 13*19in. I plan on using letter press and found images to fill in the protest sign for subsequent layers.

Shostakovich's 8th Quartet

I think this quartet is the musical composition I'm going to use for my video. I found this interesting article on the history of the quartet that claims "its genius is that it transcends individual pain to address all human despair. This is the reason for its success. The torment that it voices is the tragic, human agony of all those who have experienced grievous loss whether it be due to fascism, war, or personal bereavement. Shostakovich's Eighth String Quartet resonates with this bitter universal experience"

Project Ideas

I've long been interested classical music and the historical context surrounding it, particularly the music of Shostakovich. For my project I would like to take a least one piece of classical music (5-15min long) and research the social and political history behind the piece, as well how it connects to modern social and political issues. Then, I would use that information to create a stop-motion visual narrative that would be set to that piece of music. I would use drawing, photography, found objects
and digital effects to create the stop-motion. I collaborated on a similar smaller scale stop-motion in the past. However, for this project, I would focus on how the images relate to the social and political context surrounding the piece of music in addition to the music itself. I envision creating a stop-motion similar to this video, but incorporating aspects of drawing, printing and other mediums beside just photographs.
